 CONCERTS IN 2013
CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT 18TH DECEMBER 2013

Harmonia Sacra, accompanied by Bristol Brass Consort were invited to sing at the highly acclaimed candlelit carol service in aid of Weston Hospicecare

ADVENT REFLECTIONS 1ST DECEMBER 2013

This concert brought a traditional feast of ethereal Advent music, ranging from motets by Renaissance masters Tomas Luis de Victoria and Orlando Gibbons to the spine-tingling harmonies of Eric Whitacre's Lux Aurumque. We will also revisited Lawrence Whitehead's wonderful setting of Christe redemptor omnium, composed specially for us, which has enjoyed nearly 3000 views on YouTube since it was uploaded just under two years ago. We also performed a handful of works from our forthcoming new CD, Princely Splendour, (to be launched in May 2014) comprising exciting and rarely-heard choral works from eighteenth-century Rome.

PRINCELY SPLENDOUR  - 19TH MAY 2013

In 1747 the 22 year old Henry Benedict Stuart, brother of Bonnie Prince Charlie and grandson of King James II, was made a Cardinal by Pope Benedict XIV. One year later Henry became Archpriest of St Peter's Basilica, the first of many influential titles which he gained during a long and illustrious career. An accomplished musician and keen patron of the arts, Henry became a focal point around which a distinguished circle of Roman musicians, artists and writers revolved. This concert  featured rarely heard choral works by composers associated with Cardinal Henry, such as Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni (maestro at the Cappella Giulia from 1719-55) and Giovanni Battista Costanzi. It also included the first modern performances of works by Sebastiano Bolis, one of Cardinal Henry's favourite composers, which Harmonia Sacra recorded in July 2013 for their second CD due out in 2104

Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni - Requiem, Felix namque, In voce exultationis
Giovanni Battista Costanzi - Dixit Dominus
Sebastiano Bolis - Kyrie for double choir, motets
Alessandro Scarlatti - Ad dominum cum tribularer
